Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh
Manhyia South MP Matthew Opoku Prempeh says the demand for state protection for parliamentarians can no longer be trivialized following the murder of Abuakwa North MP JB Danquah-Adu.

He said Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu’s fatal stabbing in his bedroom last Tuesday dawn has added to several dangerous, though not tragic, attacks on MPs.

“In a short while in parliament, not less than seven MPs have been attacked in the bosom of their bedrooms which could have easily ended up in murder”, he said on Multi TV/Joy FM Newsfile Saturday.

Picking out examples of MPs who have found themselves in harm’s way, the Manhyia South MP popularly known as 'Napo' recalled that Lower Akim West MP Gifty Klenam was attacked by five armed robbers right in her bedroom.
Veteran Journalist and Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has waded into the ongoing
Kwesi Pratt Jnr
debate about the need for security protection for Members of Parliament, saying it may do them more harm than good if past incidents are anything to go by.

According to him, assigning police personnel to MPs will not necessarily make the legislators secured as some of the security personnel cannot be trusted.

The debate has been sparked following the gruesome murder of the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North on Tuesday dawn in his East Legon home. The assailants, one of whom has been arrested by the Greater Accra Police Command, got access to the MPs bedroom in his one story building with the aid of a ladder.

MPs including the Minority Leader, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has appealed to government to consider providing round the clock security for MPs as their work expose them to danger from disgruntled opponents, constituents or even the public.

But those opposed to the idea have argued for a rather improved security of all Ghanaians and not only enhanced security for MPs.

Speaking on Adom FM, Kwesi Pratt stated that some of the policemen have turned up to be thieves and may end up stealing the MPs they are assigned to; indicating that the only way all Ghanaians will be secured is to build a safe society.

“Assigning police officers to MPs will not make them safer. About eight years ago, Ghana hosted an international conference; those police officers guiding the foreign delegates and drivers from the State Protocol turn themselves around and robbed them at West Legon. How many times haven’t we heard that some police officers have used the guns purchased for them with the taxpayers’ money to rob unsuspecting people of their precious properties? So the police protect is not a sure bet to make one secured”.

He added: “The only way is for us to build a safe society and all of us will be safe. MPs are not special, every Ghanaian must be protected. Giving one policeman with a gun is not security.”

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a man suspected to have killed the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, following a tip-off.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld for now, was arrested in a special operation led by the Accra Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

He has allegedly confessed that he stabbed the MP to death.

Three mobile phones, two of which were believed to belong to the late MP, were retrieved from the suspect.

At the time of going to press, the suspect had been handed over to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), whose officials worked with personnel of the Accra Regional Police to effect the arrest.
General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountant who was filed recently by the party has revealed that the party paid huge sums of money to the Electoral Commission (EC).

According to Mathias Mokono Wilson, who claims to have worked with the party as accountant for 23 years, a total amount of GHC5.544,630 was withdrawn through him and the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, on behalf of the EC.

“Myself and Asiedu Nketia went to the bank and withdrew money on behalf of the EC,” the beleaguered accountant told Citi Fm in Accra on Wednesday.

On February 10, 2016 Mr Wilson filed a suit at the Labour Division of the Accra High Court through his solicitors from Azinyo Chambers against the NDC for unlawful dismissal, claiming that the party gave him only a week’s notice to leave the party’s head office at Adabraka, Accra, instead of the mandatory three months.

Head of Communications at the Presidency, Stan Xoese Dogbe, has reacted angrily to reports making rounds in a section of the media to the effect that he engineered the murder of the late Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, John Boakye Danquah-Adu.

Mr Danquah-Adu was murdered in his home in the wee hours of Tuesday by assailants who used a ladder to access his bedroom before stabbing him several times, according to the police.

On Thursday, the police arrested a young man whom they suspect was responsible for the MP’s killing, and launched a search for who they said were his accomplices.
JB DANQUAH'S SUSPECTED MURDERER

.The MP (name withheld) who notified the police on the suspect after being hinted by a former jail-mate of the suspect confirms that the jail-mate whose information led to the arrest of the murderer also informed him of other details that expose the real plot behind the murder.

According to the informant, the murderer was contracted by some powerful hands to conduct the gruesome murder as part of a deal which involved his release from Prison and a promise of hefty sums of money.

The plot according to the informant was hatched as part of an elaborate political scheme to brand the opposition NPP and its flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo as unpopular. The easiest way of furthering this agenda was to put to test the electoral popularity of the NPP in the backyard of the NPP flagbearer just before elections and this could only be secured by way of a by-election.

We can confirm that the first target was Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta-Akyea; however, the contractors declined ordering the hit on him as a result of concerns that murdering the renowned lawyer can easily be linked to the ruling Party as a result of his loud opposition to the current government.

The plotters from what the informant heard changed their target just before the murderer was released to JB Danquah who is also an MP in the Akyem Abuakwa region. The plan from what the informant heard was to force a by-election, get the NDC to spend heavily on it to reduce the vote margin of the NPP so as to make it clear that the NPP is weak even in the backyard of its leader.

Sources at the CID suggest that the murderer was released recently as part of the Justice for All programme even though he did not meet the criteria for release. Other snippets of information also suggest that his other accomplices are all beneficiaries of the programme. The police is still interrogating these murderers for a complete picture of what happened. Stay tuned.

President John Dramani Mahama has been caught in his own web of deception after telling the nation last week that the National Democratic Congress government he now leads had used the last seven years, of its two terms in office, in building the infrastructural base of the country, and that the NDC will need a third consecutive term to enable it "put money into the pockets" of the people, from 2017.

President Mahama, who had in previous years promised Ghanaians a "better Ghana," now says Ghanaians will only feel the effect of his performance in their pockets in the third term of the NDC government, if retained in office in the November elections.
